As believers, we’ve often heard about the call to spread the Good News. But where does this passion originate, and how is it deeply rooted in scripture? At Adorned In Faith, a hub for Christian teaching and social enterprise, we’ve delved into the Bible to uncover the rich tapestry of missionary work throughout the ages.

Why Missions? The Biblical Mandate

Scripture emphasises God’s desire to reach every heart and every corner of the earth with His love. Consider the profound words of *The Great Commission* in Matthew 28:18-20, where Jesus explicitly directs His followers to make disciples across all nations. Similarly, in Acts 1:8, the divine strategy unfolds: start at home (Jerusalem), move to your broader community (Judea and Samaria), and then reach out to the ends of the earth. Paul’s words in **Romans 10:13-15** remind us that faith comes by hearing, emphasising the importance of missionaries.

Answering the Call: Biblical Figures in Missions

Throughout scripture, many answered God’s clarion call with faith and action:

◆ Abraham’s  journey was not just about land but being a source of blessing to all nations.

◆ Moses, though initially reluctant, became the deliverer of Israel.

◆ Isaiah’s bold proclamation, “Here am I. Send me!” epitomises the missionary spirit.

◆ Jonah learned, albeit the hard way, that God’s compassion is boundless, even for the people of Nineveh.

The likes of Paul, Peter, and Barnabas spread the Gospel’s light, overcoming
numerous challenges, reflecting God’s heart for all humanity.

Pillars of Early Christian Missions

Several figures laid the foundation for Christian missionary endeavours:

◆ Paul and Barnabas: Their journeys carved paths for the Gospel across diverse lands.

◆ Silas and Timothy: Faithful comrades to Paul, instrumental in early church planting.

◆ Priscilla and Aquila: Not just aiding Paul, but also nurturing budding teachers like Apollos.

◆ John Mark: From a faltering start with Paul to penning the Gospel of Mark.

◆ Apollos: His eloquence and fervour accelerated the early church’s expansion.

Our faith stands on the shoulders of many who heeded the call to missions. The biblical call isn’t just for a select few but for the entire Church. At Adorned In Faith, we’re inspired by these stories and are committed to equipping believers to walk this path, united in our aim to share God’s boundless love. Join us in this journey of faith, purpose, and divine calling.
