Introduction

‘And God said…’

If you know your Bible, you’ll know that God acted and spoke in numerous ways in ancient times. We know what the Bible characters did when they heard from God and how their stories played out.

Our questions today are – can we only rely on what God did in the past? Is reading the Bible and hearing about the Word the same as actually hearing God’s voice?   Why is it so important to hear God’s voice, and can we still do so in modern times?

First, we can learn much about God’s personality, character, and attitude from the Bible, others, or the church.   However, all this differs from hearing Him for yourself and your situation.

Hearing from God in a natural and personal way is what cements your relationship with Him.   It makes Him real and makes you realise that your prayers and conversations with Him are not at all one-sided. He is more present than you’ll ever realise, and He loves you so much that He’ll take the time to speak to you personally.

Hearing from God

God still speaks.

Perhaps you’ve wished in the past for God to talk to you the way He spoke to people in the Bible. After all, He sent dreams and angels and once even wrote on a wall (in Daniel 5). Life would be so much easier if God could just tell you want to do.

The good news is that God is still the same today as He was thousands of years ago in biblical times. He still speaks today. The problem is us.   We don’t know how to recognise His voice anymore.

Centre your heart.

Jeremiah 29:13 says we can only find God when we ‘seek Him with all our hearts.’  Hebrews 11:6 states that God will reward those earnestly seeking Him.

God responds to our desire for more of Him. He is the Gentleman God.

He doesn’t barge in and starts talking a mile a minute. He wants your complete attention, the centering of your heart.   Just like you won’t open up to someone not giving you his full attention, so is God. He wants you to listen, to really focus on Him, and then He will respond.   To hear God’s voice, you must regularly focus on Him as fully as possible.

Why we should hear for ourselves – God reveals Himself.

When we read the Bible, emotion is often lacking.   Yes, there are dramatic stories in the Bible, but written words on a page are just not the same as having someone speak to you.

For instance, when God gave Moses the 10 Commandments, was He stern? Did He provide the information as a matter of fact, or did He perhaps invite Moses (and us) in an inspiring way to follow Him and keep His rules?   The Hebrew word here is ‘dabar’ and simply means ’10 words from God.’ (It was mistranslated as commandments.)

Based on God’s loving nature, we can deduce that He was probably much more expressive and inviting in His intent when He gave Moses the 10 Commandments.  But without hearing, who would know?

Hearing directly from God is a beautiful and life-changing experience. Sometimes He wants to give you direction for your life.   Other times He wants you to pray for the world or speaks to you about other people so that you can share prophetic words with them.   God can also speak to reveal His character and draw you nearer to Him.

‘How can I hear God speaking to me?’

Some say that they can audibly hear God. Others simply sense new or inspiring thoughts they would never have thought of themselves. It is also possible to hear God through inspiring bible speakers, biblical meditation, worship music, or while reading His word. You can even hear God speak through conversations with others.

‘How do I know it comes from God?’

The best way is to stay in Him.  To be in a relationship and to be very personal with Him.   The more we spend time in God’s word, the easier it is to recognise His voice.

Also, remember that God will never contradict Himself or go against anything written in His Word.

You’ll recognise Him in His characteristics and his loving nature. This will never change, and what He says will always be consistent with what He says to others in the Bible.

It is possible to fool yourself into hearing what you want to hear, so turn back to God and ask Him again when in doubt.   Other believers can also help to affirm what you sense that the Lord is saying to you.

Conclusion

‘Draw near to Me.’

God wants to interact with you! He can’t wait to draw nearer to you.   Ask, seek, and knock. God can’t wait to give your guidance regarding situations in your life. He cares about you.

Stop, and start listening.   As soon as you’re attentive, you’ll find Him very near, and very personal. Experiencing such intimacy with God is lovely and will improve everything in your life.
